Drummoyne roofing and the salt problem nobody mentions
Roof and gutter repairs in Drummoyne. Federation and inter-war homes between Victoria Road, Iron Cove and Five Dock Bay, all of it in salt air.

Water on three sides
Drummoyne is close to being a peninsula. Victoria Road and Lyons Road run through the middle of it, with Iron Cove and the bridge on one side, Five Dock Bay and Taplin Park on the other, and the Parramatta River frontage at Birkenhead Point and Brett Park. The housing is a mix: Federation and inter-war brick on the slopes, terraces and semis in the older pockets near Victoria Road, and a thick band of medium-density apartments closer to the water.
All of it sits in salt air, and that is the single most useful thing to know about roofing here.
Salt shortens the life of metal
Fasteners, flashings, gutters and sheet all corrode faster in a marine atmosphere than two kilometres inland. It shows up as:
- Rust blooming at fastener heads and washers on metal roofs
- Gutters and downpipes failing at the joints earlier than expected
- Galvanic corrosion where dissimilar metals touch — old lead or copper against new steel, or runoff from one onto the other
- Valley irons and flashings going before the roof covering does
The response is specification, not avoidance: material grade and coating matched to the exposure, correct fasteners and washers, and dissimilar metals deliberately separated. See metal and Colorbond roofing and gutter work.
The rest of the usual Drummoyne list
- Ridge and hip pointing rebedded and repointed on tiled roofs
- Cracked and chipped tiles replaced
- Wind-lifted ridge capping, which the exposure here makes more likely
- Internal box gutters on the attached rows near Victoria Road, choked at the sump
- Long low-pitch roofs over apartment blocks with too few downpipes
Drummoyne is in the City of Canada Bay, which lists around 20 conservation areas in Schedule 5 of the Canada Bay LEP 2013, so some streets carry heritage controls on street-visible roof work.
Exposure cuts both ways
An exposed site on a slope above Iron Cove gets wind as well as salt. Ridge capping and sheet ends that would sit undisturbed inland get tested here, which is why fixing specification and edge detail matter more than they do in a sheltered suburb.
