Canterbury roofing beside the river and the racecourse
Roof repairs, restoration and gutters in Canterbury. Federation and inter-war brick off Canterbury Road, plus low-pitch walk-up blocks near the racecourse.
Other areas we serve
Four decades of housing in one suburb
Canterbury runs along the Cooks River, with Canterbury Road as its spine, the racecourse and Tasker Park on the river flats, and the station and shops at Charles Street in the middle. The housing spans a long period: Federation cottages near the older centre, inter-war brick bungalows through the middle streets, and a substantial band of post-war red-brick walk-up flats closer to the main road.
Those three eras need three different approaches, and the flats are the ones most often neglected.
Walk-up blocks and their gutters
A three-storey 1960s block has a large, low-pitch roof catchment draining through a long gutter run and surprisingly few downpipes. That was marginal when it was built and it is worse now, because the gutter has lost its fall and the downpipes are partly blocked.
What we find: standing water in the middle of the run, rust through from the inside, sheet ends corroded over the gutter, and lifted ridge capping after wind. The fix is drainage sized to what the roof actually collects, with the fall reinstated. See gutter repair and replacement.
Strata-owned roofs need a written itemised quote and often a documented inspection report before a committee will approve anything. Both can be prepared.
The houses
The Federation and inter-war tiled roofs here are conventional restoration candidates: crumbling ridge and hip pointing, rusted valley irons under the street trees, cracked tiles, and eaves gutters hung without fall. Roof restoration covers that work properly — rebed, repoint, replace, reseal, then coat.
River flats and fast water
The low ground along the river fills quickly in a short intense downpour, and stormwater lines can surcharge. A downpipe discharging into a full line backs water up rather than clearing it. We look at the discharge point as part of the inspection, not just the gutter.
Council
Canterbury sits in the Canterbury-Bankstown Council area under the CBC LEP 2023, which has conservation areas across the LGA, including six in neighbouring Hurlstone Park. We check the controls applying to your address before specifying street-visible work.
